What is the NDIS?

The NDIS provides funding for people with disability to access the supports and services they may need to live and enjoy their life, and achieve their goals. Goals may include more independence, more community participation, improved health and wellbeing, or help to gain employment.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is the independent agency responsible for implementing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). If you’re eligible for the NDIS, the NDIA will work with you and your family to help you identify the supports you need to live your life and achieve your goals.

Who can receive NDIS funding?

To be eligible for the NDIS you must:

Have a permanent and significant disability, and

Be aged between 7 and 65 years, and

Live in Australia and be an Australian citizen, or hold a permanent visa, or a protected special category visa.

What services and supports can I access with my NDIS funding?

NDIS will fund supports or services which may help you with living arrangements, independence, social participation, health and wellbeing, education and employment. An example of some of these services include in home care, someone to help you with personal care needs such as bathing, dressing or meals, social support and companionship services, respite care, transport, home maintenance and modifications, and more.

Who controls my NDIS funds?

You do! Your NDIS plan will tell you how much funding you will receive for each support but it’s your decision how funds are managed. You can choose to manage your funds yourself or nominate the NDIS, a registered provider or someone else you trust to do it for you. With the NDIS you’ll always retain control over how, when and where your supports are provided.
